Megan Goodwin:

No nonsense blast from the past. Yeah, what you're about to hear are outtakes from our very first recording session.

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

Anyway, nerds we really thought we would record three episodes maybe for our few good friends would listen and then Meghan would have learned audacity, I would have bought myself a microphone and we would wrap this thing up. We in no way thought that two and a half years later, we would be for grants 50 some odd episodes and a book deal into this thing. So thank you so much for listening. All 100,000 of those clicks.

Megan Goodwin:

We appreciate you so much. So, so many clicks. So many so many nerds. So many folks being smarter about religion. We appreciate you all

keeping it 101 A killjoys Introduction to the Study of Religion. How are you? Oh, I'm Elise more. Do you first most importantly, I am a religious studies killjoy.

Megan Goodwin:

Who am I you ask? I'm Meghan Goodwin, and I am a professional explainer of why you have to care about religion even if you yourself are not religious.

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

So Megan, what are we doing here? What is keeping it 101

Megan Goodwin:

Pajama party

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

if we offer a podcast up, it's a way to get in touch with our students. It's way to talk with fellow colleagues about how they might teach about religion. But also it's always about my dad. Is this something my dad can pop in his ears while he's doing his weirdo? Post military 5am walk around the block and actually learn a thing. And I think that kind of public scholarship needs to be in as many venues as possible. And we are some chatty nerds can confirm why do you think you should be doing this? What is your role in this podcast?

Megan Goodwin:

I'm worried about your dad to this Play.

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

Everyone's worried about what's up, Lloyd.

Megan Goodwin:

No, I Well, again, I run a program on public scholarship of religion. So I think I think contemporary Americans know shockingly little about religion. And more than that, I think they know less than they think they know. Public education in the United States doesn't talk about religion in constructive or academic ways. So everyone assumes that their personal experience with religion is universally visible. And that is, a not true and be really dangerous because we get into situations where people regulate legislate, incarcerate folks for doing religion in ways that aren't necessarily recognizable. They think of it as doing religion wrong. So I'm really concerned about the material effects of our understandings of religion. And I am hoping that the podcast can help folks like Lloyd understand why religion matters, even if they don't have personal religious commitments.

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

So stay tuned and tune in.

Megan Goodwin:

Do your homework is on the syllabus.

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

Peace out nerds. I feel like I've got this really dope announcer voice going on.

Megan Goodwin:

How are you not already a sportscaster is my question.

Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst:

Yeah. Then then just fulfill all of my tiny Butch fantasies.
